Four-year-old Carlos was referred to our Seen & Heard program six months ago by his Head Start program. His teachers were concerned because Carlos was exhibiting aggressive behaviors, including hitting other children for no apparent reason. Carlos, who is bilingual in Spanish and English, also has significant speech delays and fine motor difficulties for which he receives speech and occupational therapy.
At Carlos’ initial intake, the Seen & Heard case coordinator learned that Carlos has experienced a significant amount of trauma. Domestic violence is prevalent in his family, and while much of the abuse is verbal rather than physical, it is equally as painful. Carlos’ father perpetuates much of the verbal abuse toward all of his family members. It was clear that his actions were having a profound affect on young Carlos.
Carlos’ father was extremely disengaged in his son’s upbringing and was unaware of many of his interests and routines. By incorporating his father into play sessions, he recognized how his behaviors were negatively affecting Carlos. While at first he simply didn’t know how to play, Carlos’ dad soon acknowledged that by playing with his son he is much more conscious of his likes, dislikes and play patterns. He has also learned how to support Carlos by working with his wife and establishing rules and consequences for unwanted behaviors. Although he still struggles with reprimanding Carlos using appropriate discipline, Carlos’ behavior has significantly improved. As a result, Carlos has become less anxious, has fewer crying episodes and has significantly reduced his disobedient behaviors.
In addition to the family’s extensive work through Seen & Heard, Carlos’ parents were also referred to couple’s counseling for their ongoing verbal abuse, which has resulted in positive changes for their relationship.
