21st Century Learning Centers Safe Space recently partnered with low-performing public schools in Queens to establish our 21st Century Learning Centers, which serve 2,500 kids. Our programs focus on correcting social and behavioral problems in the classroom, and targeting schoolchildren who are performing below grade level or are in need of counseling. The centers provide more than just recreational activities and academic assistance; they offer engaging and enriching programs with a therapeutic arts approach. Through expressive activities like music, poetry and art, and a focus on mental health and well-being, we make sure that our kids are emotionally equipped for learning…and having fun! 21st Century is now part of Leave No Child Behind, and presently, there is an increased effort to target English language learners and students with disabilities. *The report cards of Safe Space`s 21st Century kids in 2001-02 show that 90% of children improved at least one level in English; 85% improved at least one level in Math.
KIDWISE Now
in its eighth year, our nationally recognized KidWise program continues to
provide innovative school-based mental health services for middle school youth.
KidWise`s success is made possible through an alliance with school
administrators, teachers and parents. Since 1995, KidWise has been targeting
middle school students who are underachieving or demonstrating self-defeating
behavior. KidWise is a valuable resource for both students and their
parents as they begin the transition into adolescence, offering an array of
services such as crisis and supportive counseling, stress management, problem
assessment, evaluation and treatment, a community advisory board, a parent
resource center, and creative arts therapy. The KidWise program helps
parents and teachers to get involved in their children`s education and
after-school lives. KidWise works to break down the barriers that prevent
success in school.
In 2002-03, 98% of KidWise participants had no
school suspensions or altercations with school security officers
99% of KidWise students averted placement
in Special Education and remained mainstreamed
